Ebony and Ivory live together…

Hmmm…  Well, actually, I’m sure race issues still exist in Suriname, but they seem have done an amazing job on the religious front!

The Keizerstraat  mosque and Neveh Shalom synagogue in the capital, Paramaribo, live side by side in perfect harmony.

With the Saint Peter and Paul cathedral just down the block…

Along with numerous Hindu temples scattered around the city and countryside.

What really caught my attention though, was the obvious daily integration between the various communities at meal times.  Restaurants serving halal food often also served alcohol and Hindu restaurants regularly had meat dishes on the menu- showing to me that people with differing religious dietary restrictions would eat together enough that restaurants would as a matter of course cater to those various needs.

How wonderfully sane.
